After the fire, the family lived in an overcrowded small shack where there is no space and privacy. They are comprising of three children with ten grandchildren and are dependent on social grants to make a living.
The fire gutted the No. 1712 N.U.1, Mdantsane (Ward 12) in August 2019 and although the cause of the fire is not known, a case was opened in the N.U.1 Police Station in Mdantsane.
Following a much publicized plight of the family, businessman Chippa Mpengesi of Chippa Holdings volun-teered to rebuild the house utilizing alternative Building Technology (ABT).
Speaking during the event, Chippa Mpengesi of Chippa Holdings said “the construction was halted during Covid 19 lockdown period which then caused delays as some suppliers closed during the period.”
The handover took place on Thursday 29 October in Nu.1 Mdantsane.
